An acrylic painting can resemble a watercolor or an oil painting, depending on how much water is used to dilute the paint. It is a much faster drying paint, however, and becomes water-resistant when dry. In addition to the short drying time, acrylics have the advantage of low toxicity, longevity and cost. The disadvantage to using acrylics instead of oils is that oils are more forgiving, making it easier to blend two or more colors into each other.
