Marc Chagall was a Russian-born French artist, born July 7, 1887 and educated in art in Saint Petersburg and later in Paris where he spent the rest of his life, except for a period of residence in the United States from 1941 to 1948. During the 1960s, Chagall travelled widely, often in association with large-scale commissions he received including the painting of a ceiling for the Paris Opera, a window for the United Nations building, New York, murals for the Metropolitan Opera House and more.

Chagall's unique distinctive use of form, shape and color in his artwork is derived in part from Russian expressionism and was influenced by French cubism. He created a unique career in virtually every artistic medium, including paintings, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramics, tapestries and fine art prints. Chagall's haunting, exuberant, and poetic images have enjoyed universal appeal. He was a master of understanding the use of color in art. Chagall died March 28, 1985 in France. His works of fine art are highly sought after by museums and art collectors worldwide. Chagall is critically acclaimed and widely considered as one of the undisputed greatest artists of the 20th century.
