Erte was born as Romain de Tirtoff in 1892 in St. Petersburg, Russia. He was raised among the elite of Russia which later greatly influenced the development of his art style. He took on the name Erte, the French pronunciation of his initials (R.T.), when he moved to Paris at the age of 18. By the age of 23 he began designing covers for Harper's Bazaar, eventually creating over 240 covers for the magazine. Erte developed a reputation as a renowned painter, sculptor, set designer and lithographer, but is probably best known as the father of Art Deco with his greatest influence on theatre and fashion. His works are displayed in many prestigious museums throughout the world, including the Smithsonian in Washington DC, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum in California and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
