Giclees

The Giclée (pronounced "zhee-clay") is a fairly new technique used in fine art and, therefore, unknown to many. The term was first used by Jack Duganne, a printmaker. He used this neologism to describe the use of ink-jet printing to create images. The word "giclée" is derived from the French language word "gicler" meaning "to squirt, spurt, or spray". The name was originally applied to fine art prints created on Iris printers in a process invented in the early 1990s but has since come to mean any high quality ink-jet print and is often used in galleries. The earliest giclees were created in the late 1980s. Professionally-produced inkjet works of art are much more expensive than the offset lithography process which is also used in fine art. Below are some fine examples of giclees.
