Henri Matisse (1869 – 1954) was a French artist who created works in several media, however, he was best known as a painter, keeping with the classical tradition in French painting. He married and had a daughter and two sons. His wife and daughter were often used as models for his work. His expressiveness through his use of color and his expertise in drawing was displayed in his works for a period of over 50 years. In 1952 he established a museum in his birthplace city of Nice which is dedicated to his work. This museum is now the third-largest collection of Matisse works in France.
