Serigraphy first evolved in the 1900s. A serigraph is sometimes also called a silkscreen. This name has been used because a serigraph is created using a process in which paint is pushed through a fine silk or nylon screen that is tightly stretched across a frame, onto either canvas or fine art paper. Special chemicals are used to block out areas that should not be painted. A different screen is then used for each color represented in the artwork. Often a serigraph comprises hundreds of colors, requiring hundreds of screens. After applying the paint to the screen, the artist uses a special tool to pull the paint across the screen, printing the image on the paper or canvas placed beneath. Serigraphy provides the ability to create a work of art that can closely resemble oils, pastels or watercolors. This process has been used by many famous artists, including Erte, Brett-Livingstone Strong, Edna Hibel and others.
